Bagheria hosts “Macelleria Palermo”: a photographic exhibition

to not forget the years of lead of the mafia

From 05 to 15 April 2025

The Municipality of Bagheria will host the photographic exhibition “Macelleria Palermo” from April 5, a high-impact exhibition curated and produced by photojournalists Franco Lannino and Michele Naccari. The exhibition, which will be open to the public from April 5 to 15 at Villa Butera, represents a raw and touching tribute to the victims of mafia violence that bloodied Palermo between the late 1980s and the early 2000s.
The inauguration will be held on Saturday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Villa Butera and will see the participation of the mayor of Bagheria, Filippo Maria Tripoli, the councilor for Social Policies, Emanuele Tornatore, the deputy secretary of Assostampa Palermo Roberto Leone and one of the two authors, Franco Lannino.
“Macelleria Palermo” is an exhibition that aims to tear the veil of oblivion and bring back to collective memory the years of lead of the mafia, when the city of Palermo was the scene of a war without quarter. The 44 black and white photographs, along with a selection of color shots, immortalize scenes of murders and massacres, visual testimonies of a brutal violence that has profoundly affected the history of the city. Each photograph is accompanied by an information sheet contained in the catalog, distributed free of charge, which will provide details on the date, place and name of the victim.

“The exhibition represents an opportunity to reflect on the past, to honor the memory of the victims and to reiterate the importance of the fight against the mafia – says Mayor Tripoli – A warning for the new generations, so that they do not forget and so that they too are protagonists in building a society free from oppression”.

Franco Lannino: photojournalist from Palermo, born in 1959, he documented the second mafia war, the Cosa Nostra massacres and the phenomenon of immigration in the Mediterranean. He is currently a stage photographer at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and runs a shelter for abandoned cats.

Michele Naccari: photojournalist from Palermo, born in 1956, he worked with Lannino documenting mafia crimes.
Both collaborated with the historic newspaper “L’Ora” in Palermo. After the definitive closure of “L’Ora” in May 1992, they worked for the Giornale di Sicilia, for La Sicilia, for Repubblica and for the national Ansa and for the Milanese distribution agency, the “Giacominofoto” and with “l’Olympia” in Rome.
